An FIR can be cancelled or quashed through legal proceedings. The approach depends on the nature of the offence and stage of proceedings.
Compromise — Compoundable Offences
Many PPC offences are compoundable. Complainant and accused reach a settlement; the court accepts it and proceedings end.
Police Cancellation Report
If investigation reveals no offence, police file a cancellation report before the Magistrate.
High Court Quashing — Section 561-A CrPC
The High Court can quash FIR proceedings where the case is an abuse of process or no cognisable offence is made out.
